We asked permission from the Duchy to plant some trees on the drive and on the edge of the car park at our new offices, The Stables. Peter Foley (late of Holden Clough nursery and a well known broadcaster) provided some useful advice and it just so happens that he had been busy planting a new orchard himself where he now lives in Waddington. He was about to place an order with a specialist nursery, RV Roger of Pickering , and offered to add our trees to his order to save on carriage. The trees were heeled in for a few weeks waiting for milder weather and we got them in and staked just before the snows and frost came again. If anyone wants to follow our example and plant fruit trees, Peter is a good person to ask for advice on varieties! If all else fails then give Martin Charlewsorth a call and he will do my best (01200 448000). There’s a Lancashire Apples Project that has very reasonably priced old varieties available – next year they plan to have more stock available.
